⚠️ Important Considerations
It is crucial to remember that BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool.
-
Muscle Mass: BMI doesn’t differentiate between muscle and fat. Highly muscular individuals (like athletes) may have a BMI in the Overweight or Obese categories despite having very low body fat.
-
Age and Sex: On average, older adults and women tend to have more body fat than younger adults and men, respectively, for the same BMI.
-
Ethnicity: Some populations, particularly those of Asian descent, may be at an increased health risk at a lower BMI cutoff (sometimes starting at $23.0 text{ kg}/text{m}^2$ for Overweight).
-
Other Measures: For a complete health assessment, healthcare providers often consider BMI along with waist circumference (to measure abdominal fat) and other health factors like blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
